When I was younger, I used to devour book after book of any genre, really. I actually finished books and re-read them, too. As I grew up and my laptop and my phone became my new BFFs, I found less and less time to dig into a good read. I still visit book stores often, just to see what’s new, and sometimes I catch myself buying books I won’t touch until months or even years (!) after buying them. And not even finishing. At one point I was like, mate, you really gotta get back into reading and make time for it! And so I did. This is how I carved in some time every day to read:
Establish a routine.
Making time to read is key. You probably will find it hard to just pick up a book and read it like that. You gotta plan, set aside some time a day to read. Maybe you can whip one out when you’re on the tram or on the bus on the way somewhere. Maybe you have some spare time you would be spending scrolling through Twitter. What works for me is I wake up a little earlier, just to lounge about in bed, to read for 20 minutes. I’d read on the tram on my way to work. On my way home from work. And maybe a few minutes before bed.
If you need a bit more motivation, you might set yourself some goals. Like reading 5 books in a month. Sign up to Goodreads to log your reads and stay on top of your reading habits. Maybe you’ll juggle multiple books at once but I find logging your reads rewarding.
Get books you actually want to read.
You don’t need to read a book that everyone else is raving about. If you’re not into Classics or whatnot, you don’t have to read it if you don’t enjoy it. Pick out books you’re excited to read and with excitement, you’ll automatically find time to keep reading.
Get more books!
You don’t exactly have to empty your pockets. You can just borrow some from your family or friends and dig in. Maybe even hit up the library. I find that having books stacked up beside my bed and seeing that every night motivates me to open a book and start reading.
Always have a book on you!
Even if you think you won’t be getting much reading done today, keep a book with you. Maybe you’ll find some spare time. And before you continue scrolling through your Instagram feed, maybe you’ll remember that you’re getting a chance to read a great story. Of course there’s eReaders to help out with convenience of space.
How do you find time to read?
